Sir James Smith’s Community School, Cornwall
Sir James Smith’s Community School in Cornwall was looking for the perfect partner to design and install two bespoke shelters to improve the functionality of their outdoor spaces. The school’s aim was to create sheltered areas for year-round use, enabling students and staff to make better use of the outdoor quadrants. The primary objectives of the project were as follows:
Exacting Standards: The project required the chosen partner to perform a detailed site survey and provide structural calculations to ensure the shelters fit precisely in their designated locations. This thorough preparation was essential to guarantee both the structural integrity of the shelters and their seamless integration into the school’s outdoor spaces.
Varying Locations: The two shelters were designed for distinct purposes in different settings: one was to be installed over a grassy area, while the other was to be positioned over a block-paved area. These unique locations presented different challenges, requiring the chosen partner to adapt their approach for each site to ensure both structures were perfectly suited to their environments.
Consistency of Design: Although the shelters differed in size, maintaining a consistent design aesthetic was critical. The school wanted the shelters to complement one another and harmonise with the surrounding buildings. It was imperative that the successful tender understood the importance of this requirement and incorporated a cohesive design across both shelters, ensuring they presented a unified and visually appealing addition to the campus.
After reviewing the school’s requirements, NBB Outdoors recommended two custom Freestanding Winterbourne Shelters with the following key features:
Perfect Fit: Following detailed site surveys and precise measurements, two shelters were designed with dimensions of L10000mm x D8000mm x H2400mm and L12550mm x D8000mm x H2400mm. The structural calculations played a critical role in ensuring both shelters were a perfect fit, taking into account the varying dimensions and specific site conditions. Special allowances were made to accommodate the unique features of each location, guaranteeing that the shelters not only fit seamlessly into their respective spaces but also maintained stability and durability over time.
Colour and Finish: Both shelters were finished in Umbra Grey (RAL 7022) with an anti-corrosive triplex coating, ensuring long-lasting durability and a consistent aesthetic across both structures. This premium finish not only enhances their visual appeal but also provides robust protection against the elements, ensuring the shelters remain in excellent condition for years to come.
Access and Environment: NBB Outdoors worked closely with the school’s maintenance team to minimise disruptions during installation. All waste removal and construction activities were carefully managed to avoid interfering with daily school operations and ensured staff and pupils could continue their day without interruption.
NBB Outdoors’ expertise and attention to detail ensured the successful completion of the project, exceeding the school’s expectations. The two shelters not only enhanced the functionality of the outdoor spaces but also blended seamlessly with the school environment.
